FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
IRISH TEEN SUICIDE PROBLEM NEEDS CROSS COMMUNITY SUPPORT
San Francisco, Nov 7, 2007 - The growing teenage suicide problem
in Northern Ireland was recently addressed by the Irish American
Unity Conference (IAUC).
In September the San Francisco Chapter of the IAUC passed a
resolution in regard to the tragic teenage suicides facing the
Irish communities. The IAUC National Board voted unanimously to
pass this resolution at their annual convention in Boston.
The youth of Ireland is its most precious resource and greatest
hope for the future. These suicides are tragedies for families
and local communities. The IAUC urges a cross community strategy
to utilize, implement and integrate professional counselors,
mental health workers, educate youth counselors to lead,
encourage broad base education, and to be part of peer programs.
The IAUC firmly believes that training and support services
should begin to counsel young people on ways to deal with changes
and social problem solving
IAUC National President John Fogarty stated "No society can
endure that devours its' young"
The Irish American Unity Conference calls upon the Republic of
Ireland, the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland Executive and
Northern Irelands church leaders to address and support the
implementation of a coherent suicide prevention program in
Northern Ireland.
