Irish Northern Aid Welcomes Historic Agreement
New York, NY. (March 27, 2007) Irish Northern Aid's National
President, Paul Doris, has welcomed the agreement between Ian
Paisley's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Sinn Fein to set a
firm date, May 8th, for the establishment of the Northern Ireland
Assembly and pledged Irish American support for power sharing
government in the north of Ireland
"INA supported the Sinn Fein strategy and we congratulate Sinn
Fein for being the driving force behind the Peace Process" Doris
said. "The Irish Hunger Strike of 1981 was the beginning of the
political awakening for Irish Republicans and it will not go
unnoticed that the Assembly is to begin functioning three days
after the 26th anniversary of the death of Bobby Sands
"May 8th is also the anniversary of the assassination of the
Loughgall Martyrs and these dates are a reminder of the
sacrifices made by Irish Republicans in the conflict. We remain
committed to their aspirations of a United Ireland," Doris said.
Doris paid tribute to those in the US who worked for the
breakthrough but cautioned against complacency. "Irish American
activists can take pride in the role they played in getting to
this historic day, but much remains to be done and we have to be
ever vigilant that all parties involved live up to their
commitments," Doris said.
"For the first time in history, the seeds of democracy have been
sown in the north of Ireland and those seeds must not be allowed
to die because of bigotry, injustice or inequality against
anyone, regardless of their political or religious persuasion.
In the recent elections the people voted overwhelmingly to
restore the Assembly and North - South Ministerial Council and
INA will do its part to ensure that the people's wishes are
achieved." Ends.
