Reiss Decision Calls 'Honest Broker' Role Into Question
REISS DECISION CALLS ‘HONEST BROKER’ ROLE INTO QUESTION
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Washington, D.C. November 7, 2005 - Today’s decision by
President Bush's Special Envoy to Northern Ireland,
Mitchell Reiss, to apply fundraising restrictions to Sinn
Fein president Gerry Adams' proposed visit to the U.S.
has caused anger and alarm throughout Irish America.
Mr. Adams has now cancelled his trip, noting that the
decision was 'a rather amateurish effort' by the U.S.
administration to get Sinn Fein to change its position on
Policing in Northern Ireland.
Irish American Unity Conference (IAUC) National President,
Dr. Robert C. Linnon, sharply criticized Dr. Reiss's
decision: "Mitchell Reiss's credibility is now holed below
the waterline and irreparable damage has been done to the
image of the US government as an honest broker."
"Sinn Fein's fundraising in the U.S. will be unaffected by
this move but those who are opposed to the Good Friday
Agreement will be emboldened by Dr. Reiss's decision. He
has overplayed his hand and in the process he has
undermined future United States influence in the peace
process,” the IAUC president said.
"Meanwhile the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI)
remains as unacceptable as ever to the vast majority of
nationalists in Northern Ireland. It is up to Irish
America to move the White House focus from Gerry Adams to
the creation of an acceptable police service. This demands
a police service that is free from British political
interference, and a force that is accountable to a Northern
Ireland minister in a newly devolved power sharing
Administration," Dr. Linnon concluded.
