Washington, DC September 13, 2005 – British discrimination
condemned by Irish American Unity Conference (IAUC).
IAUC president Judge Andy Somers condemned the continued
discrimination being practiced by the British government
against the Belfast published Daily Ireland. The British
Government continues to refuse to place any recruitment
advertising in Daily Ireland thus disadvantaging its
nationalist readership in the jobs market. This decision
comes at a time when nationalists are twice as likely to be
unemployed as unionists.
Judge Somers said: "The British Government ban on
recruitment advertising in the new pro-United Ireland daily
newspaper Daily Ireland is old employment discrimination in
new clothes. Nationalists make up the vast bulk of Daily
Ireland's readers. If they don't have access to
recruitment advertisements then they are being
disadvantaged in the marketplace at time when British
Government own statistics show nationalists are twice as
likely to be unemployed as unionists. I have added my name
to the petition calling for this discrimination to end.
(Northern Ireland Secretary of State) Peter Hain promised
to treat Daily Ireland the same as other newspapers in the
North of Ireland; the sales proposition clearly stacks up.
The only reason to deny it this advertising is to
disadvantage nationalists.
"The North's Equality Commission has agreed to assist the
Daily Ireland legal challenge against the British
Government over this ban. However, seven years after the
signing of the Good Friday Agreement, Nationalists should
not have to seek recourse to the courts to secure their
Rights."
