IAUC Action Alert - URGENT
July 28, 2005
TO: Friends of Ireland
FROM: JERRY LALLY, National Political Action Chair
ACTION ALERT: http://www.iauc.org/08-05action.htm
Friends of Ireland,
As you know, the IRA has just released a statement
indicating that it is standing down as a military
organization and that it will pursue its' goal of a United
Ireland by purely peaceful and democratic means.
This is a truly historic move by the IRA and it calls for
immediate and massive support by all Irish Americans and
other friends who seek the reunification of Ireland.
Whether you have been writing letters for years or have
never written one, now is the time to flood government
officials and the media demanding progress on the peace
process. This is one of the best shots we are ever going to
get, so let's not miss it by sitting on our hands.
The Good Friday Agreement (GFA) was agreed to by the
parties in April of 1998. Since that time, Unionists and
the British and Irish governments have stalled the full
implementation of the GFA. The excuse most used by these
parties to delay implementation has been the continued
existence of the IRA. This excuse has been removed by the
IRA statement and its plan to dump arms.
We need every member and everyone else you can recruit to
make as many contacts as you can with your elected
representatives, the Irish and British governments and your
local media. People on the ground consider contacts with
the Irish government just as important for Irish Americans
as contact with our own representatives.
Contact can be made by written letter, e-mail or telephone,
whichever you are most comfortable with. If contacting
someone who has supported us in the past, thank him or her
for past support and urge even more involvement now. If
contacting someone who has not been involved, point out the
necessity for getting involved at this critical juncture.
Politicians pay more attention to contacts made in your own
words as opposed to canned letters so we are not including
a proposed letter. Use your own words and speak from the
heart.
The one message that you want to make sure is included in
your contact is,
THERE ARE NO MORE EXCUSES, REAL OR IMAGINED, TO DELAY
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE GFA, SO IMPLEMENT IT COMPLETELY NOW!
We would hope that everyone will make contact with all the
parties previously mentioned. If that is not possible, the
order of priority should be:
1.) Your elected representatives in Congress, Senate and
local government officials
2.) Irish government http://www.iauc.org/govcontacts.htm
3.) Local media
http://congress.org/stickers/?dir=congressorg&media=1
4.) British government
We know that we are asking a lot but if you believe in the
goal of a United Ireland, now is the time to act.
People who live in areas where the Irish or British
governments have offices should request meetings to
personally pressure them to respond favorably to the IRA
initiative. This activity should be coordinated with other
IA organizations in the area so as to present a united
front.
A list of contact information is listed on the IAUC
website: http://www.iauc.org/govcontacts.htm to aid you in
deciding who you should contact. We want to make this a
national effort and we want to keep track of what response
we are getting to this action alert. Therefore please copy
the IAUC on all correspondence by emailing your letters or
list of contacts you phoned to: iauc@iauc.org
IAUC MEMBERS: please advise your Chapter President of all
contacts you make. At-large Members please email:

Please cc: letters to iauc@iauc.org
Sincerely,
Jerry Lally
