02/10/05 - Irish Aires Needs Your Help
Table of Contents - Overall
Table of Contents – Feb 2005
February brings the fund raising event that KPFT must perform. For the next two weeks (02/12 & 02/19/05) we will be asking for your help. For those who might be new to Irish Aires, let me review the facts.
Irish Aires has been broadcast on KPFT-FM in Houston, Texas for 23 years. During that period the show has varied in length & we have had many time slots. But we have been consistent in our support for Irish music, culture, local events and justice & freedom in Ireland.
In the last 10 years, we have added other dimensions to our communications. First there was a web site (http://www.IrishAires.org); then a listing of comprehensive listing of links for Houston, Texas & the world (http://www.IrishAires.net); then we developed four different email lists in order to spread information on Irish cultural, news about Celtic current events in the Houston & Texas areas & news about Ireland, the Irish and Irish Americans.
Now the station is now streamed live on the internet (http://kpftweb.mcleodusa.net/kpft.smi) and the shows are archived so you can listen to Irish Aires at your own convenience (http://www.kpftx.org/archives/kpftsignal/index.php).
Our latest additions were the Irish Aires cultural & current events blog (http://irishairescurrentevents.blogspot.com/) and the Irish Aires news blog (http://irishaires.blogspot.com/). If you have visited either, they are worth a review.
Irish Aires is strictly a labor of love by volunteers. People who think that the sharing of Celtic music, news & information is worth the effort do the work on a daily and weekly basis for NO compensation. We get no money for what we do & all expenses are paid out of the volunteer’s pocket.
However, KPFT cannot be so lucky. KPFT keeps a radio station broadcasting on the air 24/7/365. Most of the on air people are volunteers, but the station NEEDS a crew of full time employees to answer the phones, do the office work, pay the bills and assist the volunteers in getting out good programming. KPFT has recently added it’s own news staff. Gathering local & regional news requires full time attention by several people who unfortunately have a few bills of their own. And I have mentioned the obvious items KPFT has to pay for: electricity, building upkeep & equipment to keep us on the air.
So since KPFT elects NOT to take any funds from commercial sponsorship, we have to get our sponsorship from YOU, the people who benefit from the programming, the web sites, the email lists & the BLOGS.
So we need to ask YOU to voluntarily give our station (a non-profit organization) a little money so that we can keep up the work that the station has been doing for 35 years.
Nobody needs to give a lot, but a lot of people need to GIVE.
Basic membership costs are $25 for students & people on a fixed or lower income; regular membership goes for $35 per year. In return for joining as a member, we can offer you two tickets to the upcoming Houston St. Patrick’s Day Festival at the Meridian in Houston on March 17, 2005. The return of the biggest St. Patrick's Event in the southwest, formerly held at Garden in the Heights now at the MERIDIAN (http://www.meridianhouston.com/ ) – See this site for updates
If you can give more, we have been the beneficiaries of some Irish/Celtic music CDs that we would like to give you in return for a $60 contribution (even if you can only afford to pay it out at $5 per month). See details of available CDs below.
But it is more important for you to give, then the amount you can give. Give the station what you can.
We have some thank you gifts for contributions. If you can contribute at the $60 level you will get one of the following CDs. If you can contribute at the $90 level, you will get two of the following. (Availability of individual CDs is limited, so it is first come, first serve).
